Over
the years, I tried a number of methods to find my love, including many
dating services. I found only American women who were torn between the
roles created by our society, those who were psychologically battered, or
those just plain undesirable. I had a dream and was not willing to
compromise it to a relationship that was less than my ideal. I decided to
correspond with women overseas to find a compatible partner.
Tamara’s description (17-K35) in the Scanna catalog
was just what I wanted: "Calm, faithful, caring, feminine, and fond of
children." And I felt I could meet her requirements and make her happy.
We wrote to each other for 7 months, exchanging
dozens of letters. Then, I traveled to Riga, Latvia to visit her and her
family for 10 days. I had a fairly clear understanding of her and traveled
to her with serious, but cautious, intentions.
On the fourth day of our meeting, I proposed! I knelt
before her on one knee; told her I thought we could have a wonderful life
together; and asked her to marry me. Needless to say, she said yes!
I returned to the U.S. and immediately filed for the
fiancee visa. I returned to Latvia 6 months later, then traveled to Poland
with her to get the visa. She then returned to the U.S. with me. After 2
months in the U.S., we were married. Now, we have been married for 6
months. She is exceeding my dreams.
As far as advice goes to those of you considering
finding a wife overseas . . . first, don’t lose your head. The most
attractive women may not make the best partners. Keep in mind what
characteristics are important. Be cautious, but also be honest, warm, and
caring. Ask a lot of questions in your letters and be honest with what you
write. Don’t let a difference in language stop you from meeting someone
wonderful. She will learn English quickly.
And last: courage and perseverance will bring you
happiness.
